PASS
PASS (Picture Augmentative Synsemic System) is a glyph system for use in habilitative Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) practices provided under an open font licence (free software and open source). At the core of its design are sustainability, regularity and independence from a specific language. PASS is based on precise rules and internal consistency criteria, which make it easier to understand the glyphs. PASS is designed PASS in a special font that allows words to be typed within a writing programme. In particular, the use of metasemical rhetorical figures (analogy, metonymy and synecdoche) in the design of graphic symbols for AAC was studied during the master’s thesis. The study investigated which rhetorical figure is usually preferred in the representation of various terms in children with ASD and typically developing children. Much of the project can be found on Instagram at the profile @pass__aac.

The symbols
Structure
Visual variables
Shape
Boxs are flexible in width and are “standard” and “small” (for morphosyntactic parts).
Size*
Human figure has different cuts and different percentage sizes.
Orientation
Symbols are characterized only by a two-dimensional structure.
Texture
Dense textures are avoided because they cause perceptual problems and cognitive overload.
Value
Grayscale was avoided for printing and to increase figure-ground contrast.
Color
Black and white makes it easier to switch between symbols and a better hold on attention.
Size*
Four cuts of the figure, each with three dimensions.
Basic symbols
The book
Structure
Symbols with illustration
